Obituary

Amy Paivinen Coull of Westford MA and Cliff Island ME, age 64, passed away peacefully at MGH on October 15, 2021, as a result of aggressive breast cancer which she battled over the last year with grace and dignity. She was a homemaker, a talented artist (wood, clay and fabric sculpting), an exceptional writer, flute player, master gardener, clothing designer and seamstress. Amy created beautiful things and greatly enjoyed hosting dinner parties and get-togethers for family and friends. She had a brilliant mind, and possessed a smooth golf swing, playing regularly at Butter Brook golf course from the men's tees.

Amy was born in Palo Alto, CA and lived throughout the US during her childhood and teenage years. She was a Phi Beta Kappa chemistry major and graduate of Oberlin College and established a career in technical writing and communications at Millipore Corp, a biotechnology company, where she met her husband Jim. After pausing her career to raise her family, she went back to school and obtained a BFA from Mass College of Art, originally in fashion design and then switching to sculpture. Her art studio was her sanctuary and from it came amazing works that she used to decorate her home and which she shared with others in art shows. Amy enjoyed literature and was a film buff who particularly enjoyed science fiction, mysteries, and animated movies. Her flower gardens were in bloom throughout spring, summer and fall, and were a favorite of hummingbirds which she enjoyed watching as she sat quietly nearby.

A positive, non-judgmental person in all aspects of her life, she readily gave of herself and her time to others, making wedding dresses and apparel for special family occasions, and volunteering for various community organizations that meant a lot to her. Amy believed that a person's soul remains on earth when they die, and that it lives embodied and carried forward by those that were touched and enhanced by the person that has passed.

Amy leaves her husband, Jim (Jamie) Coull, two fine sons, Scott and Douglas, mother Carol Paivinen, her brother Mike Paivinen, a sister Jan Hadland as well as many extended family members and friends that loved her.

The family thanks her caregivers, especially Dr Andrea Resciniti and Dr Kim Brennan at Emerson Hospital, and the amazing nurses, doctors and staff of the medical oncology unit at MGH for their caring and compassion during Amy's final days.
